Physical Education (PE) at St Peter's Print Page

We aim to encourage as many pupils as possible to take part in physical education whilst still striving for sporting excellence. Therefore we offer a broad and balanced programme that caters for pupils of all abilities. It is hoped that through our teaching, pupils will enjoy their physical education in lessons and will achieve personally success which will lead to a continued interest in sport and physical recreation in post school years.

The aims of the Physical Education faculty are founded on the belief that Physical Education has a vital role to play in the total education of each child. It is basic to the philosophy of the department that all pupils, regardless of ability, should be given the opportunity to gain maximum benefit as is possible from the programme, facilities and teaching expertise available.

Current facilities available to the physical education department include:

  • Gymnasium
  • Sports Hall
  • All Weather Astro Turf
  • 6 Tennis Courts
  • 6 Netball Courts
  • 2 Football Pitches
  • 1 Rugby Pitch – use of Burnham RFC for matches
  • 1 Cricket Pitch – use of Burnham Cricket Club pitch for matches
  • 3 Outdoor Cricket Nets
  • 3 Outdoor Basketball Courts
  • All Weather long jump run-ups.

Physical Education (PE) at Key Stage 3

Year 7

Students are introduced to a broad and diverse curriculum in Physical Education. They undertake games actives, dance, gymnastics and athletics.

Year 8

In year 8 the skills acquired in the year 7 are refined and developed in the wide range of activities explored previously. Students begin to undertake the roles of coach and referee and are asked to make increasingly advanced judgments about the performance of both themselves and others in order to improve.

Year 9

In year 9 students have some flexibility to choose options on a limited scale and specialise in areas of performance to refine skills and outcome further. New activities are introduced to allow students to learn new skills and explore leisure type options.

Physical Education (PE) at GCSE

Years 10 & 11

Offers students the chance to develop skills in four sports or activities throughout the course. Students may opt for sports and do more than four activities which will leave their best four scores being counted for the coursework. This is worth 60% of the overall grade in Physical Education so being good in four sports or activities is essential.Students also undertake a personal exercise plan (PEP), which investigates their fitness and training methods as part of the practical component. There is also a theory component worth 40% of the final grade. Students have one lesson a week investigating and learning about the body systems, reasons for taking part in sport, health and fitness and safety in sport.
