Modern Foreign Languages at St Peter's Print Page

There are five full-time teachers of French and German and a part-time french assistante. The department comprises:

French and German are taught throughout the school. Latin and Spanish can also be learnt in after-school clubs.

Students learn French or German in Year 7 and both languages can be continued to GCSE or even A-Level. More able students have the possibility of studying a second language in Key Stage 3. The Department aims to work supportively, cohesively and innovatively to promote a lively interest in languages and enjoyment of them, with high levels of student achievement. The Modern Foreign Languages Department has its own dedicated suite of rooms in the school. The Department also boasts its own ICT room complete with networked computers and an interactive whiteboard. A great deal of excellent software is available in both languages for students’ use.

Educational Trips and Visits

We continue to offer our value-for-money trips to extend the knowledge and background of students of the target language-speaking countries. We feel that is very important that we should be able to offer our students as broad an experience of the country, whose language they are learning. This not only encourages them to use the language but also to realise that they can get so much more from a visit by being able to understand the language and to take pleasure in being able to be understood! This can only have a motivating and stimulating effect on the students as well as enjoying the activities organised for them on the trip.

Monitoring and Rewards

Departmental monitoring of students is thorough and postcards are often sent to parents to celebrate the hard work and success of many students. Students also have the opportunity to take part in departmental quizzes and win prizes.

Primary Liaison

French and German are also taught in the local primary schools by departmental staff. This initiative has proved very successful and has created a genuine desire to learn languages.
