History at GCSE

Pupils in Year 10 and 11 study the Edexcel SHP 1336 course. Students must study one enquiry in depth – American West c1840 – 1895, one study in Development - Medicine Through Time and two coursework units. The American West enquiry looks at inhabitants and early settlers; the Plain’s Indians trappers and miners, the Mormons and cattlemen and cowboys. Settlement of the great plains; reasons for settlements, role of the companies, life and work of homesteaders and conflict on the plains: Indian wars, Custer, Sitting Bull and the demise of the Native Americans. Medicine study development looks at the changes in medicine and Public health in England and Europe from the time of the Black Death to the present day. In addition, students study an extension unit on either Ancient World and Middle Ages medicine or changes in surgery. There are also two coursework units normally from the approved Edexcel list – these are completed normally one in year 10 and one in year 11.
