English at St. Peter’s High School offers students opportunities not only to develop skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening, but also to explore and enjoy a diverse and exciting cultural heritage. Lessons are held in a suite of specialist rooms in which students have access to a wide range of resources, including ICT facilities, a dedicated quiet reading area and a wide range of stimulating texts. Students in Years 7-9 follow a programme of units that have been carefully designed to meet the requirements of the Key Stage 3 National Strategy. Following the Key Stage 3 Tests, students pursue a two-year GCSE course. In Years 12 and 13 English Literature is a highly popular option for Advanced Level study with an excellent track record of success.

Students will build on previous learning as well as developing new skills in a range of units such as: All About Me – writing unit; Boy – reading and writing unit; Non-fiction Unit – reading and writing; Public Speaking; a play; a novel; poetry; creative writing; a Media Unit. Examinations will be taken in the Summer term to assess pupils’ progress in reading and writing.

Students will build on previous learning as well as developing new skills in units such as: Flannan Isle – writing unit; a novel; Non-fiction unit – reading and writing; Public Speaking; a play; poetry; School Under Siege – a writing unit; a Media Unit. Examinations will be taken in the Summer term to assess students’ progress in reading and writing.

Students are prepared for their Key Stage 3 Tests, as well as continuing to build on their skills in the core areas of the National Curriculum. The following units are among those studied: The Plague at Eyam – a reading and writing unit; Comparing Stories from Different Times; Public Speaking; a Non-Fiction Unit; a novel; a Media Unit; poetry. In the Spring term students study Macbeth, the set play for the Key Stage 3 Tests, and a professional theatre company may be invited in for a day to assist them in this area of study. Students sit a practice Key Stage 3 examination and differentiated after-school revision classes are offered in the second half of the Spring term. Year 9 students will sit their Key Stage 3 examinations in the Summer term.

English at GCSE
| Years 10 & 11 |

All students follow a GCSE English course based upon the AQA Specification A (Code: GCSE 3702). Students produce four written coursework assignments: Original Writing, Response to Media, Response to Shakespeare and Prose Study. Three Speaking and Listening activities are assessed for coursework. A written examination assesses: Response to Reading, Ability to Argue, Persuade or Advise, Response to Poetry from Different Cultures and Ability to Inform, Explain or Describe. Students in higher sets also study English Literature, which additionally involves study of a second prose text, modern drama and pre/post 1914 poetry. The AQA Anthology is used by students of both English and English Literature. Students are supported by staff with particular emphasis upon learning targets, revision classes, active participation and opportunities to develop wider interests through educational visits.
