Citizenship at St Peter's Print Page

The Citizenship programme gives pupils the knowledge, skills and understanding to play an effective role in society at local, national and international levels. It helps them to become responsible citizens who are aware of their duties and rights. It promotes their, spiritual, moral, social and cultural development, making them more self- confident and responsible both in and beyond the classroom. It encourages pupils to play a helpful part in the life of their schools, neighbourhoods, communities and the wider world. It also teaches them about our economy and democratic institutions and values; encourages respect for different national, religious and ethnic identities; and develops pupils` ability to reflect on issues and take part in discussions.


Citizenship at Key Stage 3

Year 7

The students follow a detailed citizenship course through the Asdan programme for a whole day every half term. The course encourages students to become independent learners, to develop self- confidence, enhance motivation and self esteem. The modules covered: Healthy lifestyles, Law and order, Creative arts and the environment. Various trips are arranged throughout the course to enrich the students learning.

Year 8

Students will continue to study citizenship through the Asdan programme once a week in a formal lesson. Topics that will be covered: Healthy living, Environment, Economics.

Year 9

Citizenship will be delivered as a formal lesson once a week. Pupils will be taught about: Human rights and responsibilities, the importance of resolving conflict fairly, basic aspects of the criminal justice system, the work of community based voluntary groups, local government and public services, the importance of a healthy lifestyle, how to analyse information through a careers programme, take part in a sexual health programme and the world as a global community. Pupils will be taught these topics using skills of enquiry, communication, participation and responsible action.

 

Citizenship at Keystage 4

Years 10 & 11

Students will continue with the Citizenship programme at key stage 4 once a week as a formal lesson. Pupils will be taught:

  • Human rights and responsibility at work and how the world of work is changing
  • The work of national and international voluntary groups
  • The global community and its environmental and social implications
  • The significance of the media in society
  • How the criminal justice system works
  • The importance of solving conflict
  • Drugs Awareness
  • Sexual Health

Pupils will be taught these topics using skills of enquiry, communication, participation and responsible action.
