Art and Design at St Peter's Print Page

Welcome to St Peter’s Art & Design Department. The Art Department has three teaching rooms: A&D1 and A&D3 are general teaching rooms. A&D2 is a specialised pottery room and also the sixth form study room. During June the Art Department stage an exhibition of all GCSE and A level art. For the last two years we have very successfully had a joint exhibition with the Textiles Department.

Over the last few years trips have been arranged for GCSE and A level students to the National Gallery, Tate Britain, the V&A museum and the National Portrait Gallery.

In previous years the Art Department has worked:

  • with the team that produced the Millennium Mosaic in Burnham
  • on the designing and painting of the mural at Bradwell Power Station
  • the designing of the Waste Away logo for Maldon District Council (the one that is on your black paper recycling box)
  • posters advertising Saint FM (St Peter’s own radio station)

Art at GCSE

Years 10 & 11

GCSE students follow the Edexcel examination course. This comprises coursework which is worth 60% of the total grade and a terminal examination which is worth 40% of the total grade.

Typically the Year 10 Coursework is:

  • a project exploring surfaces through reptile skin
  • a portraiture project looking at producing portraits through line, tone and colour
  • the year 10 examination which is based on a previous Terminal Examination

Year 11 Coursework is mainly:

  • the mock examination based on a previous Terminal Examination

All coursework is produced in sketchbooks with one or more personal responses displayed outside of the sketchbook.

The Terminal Examination is set by Edexcel and has a theme eg. Beginnings, Surfaces or Safely Contained. The work has two parts:

  • the sketchbook developed over eight school weeks
  • the personal response produced during the ten hour timed test

There are four Assessment Objectives each divided into two strands against which the student’s work is marked. The Coursework is marked separately to the Terminal Examination.
