The Pastoral System Print Page

In September 2004 the Pastoral system at St Peter’s was re-structured. The schools main focus is to raise the achievement of all students by tracking and monitoring their progress. It is also essential that students attend school with the correct behaviour for learning.

For parents the first port of call is the Pastoral Support Manager (PSM). They oversee two-year groups within the school and will deal initially with all parental concerns and contacts. The PSM will contact parents on the first day of their child’s absence if they have not heard from the parent of a student’s absence. They also oversee admissions to the school, investigate incidents of poor behaviour for learning, contact parents regarding attendance or progress concerns and liaise with outside agencies to support your child’s learning.

Each year group within the school has a Lead Learning Mentor. This member of staff will monitor your child's achievement against their predicted grades and work with teaching staff and the students if areas of underachievement arise. They will also deal with behaviour issues that the Pastoral Support Manager feels are persistent or having a significant impact on a students learning.

The Achievement Director has a key strategic role within the school. They will work with two year groups within the school and monitor the work of the Lead Learning Mentor. The Achievement Director oversees the tracking and monitoring of students and will work with parents to address any areas of a students behaviour or attitude that are impacting on their academic achievement.

The work of the Pastoral team is monitored and directed by the Assistant Headteacher; Students.

Mentor Groups

Your child will be placed in a mentor group on admission to the school. This group will consist of Year 7 pupils and will meet with the mentor each day. The mentor will monitor the student closely during mentor period and lead the group in activities to aid learning and student achievement. Mentors and parents can communicate weekly via the school planner, which is the prime source of communication between staff and parents.

Mentor groups are organised after close liaison with our feeder primary schools. This ensures that our students feel settled. Interviews are held with parents during the summer term to aid transition.

The mentor is the first point of contact on most occasions regarding students’ welfare. If parents have a concern regarding students’ progress or a serious pastoral issue please contact the Pastoral Support Manager at the earliest opportunity to enable the school to resolve your concern as soon as possible.
