Aims of the Course
The aim of the course is develop an understanding of the workings of the English Legal System at AS level and at A2 to focus on an area of substantive law ie Criminal, Contract or Tort. During the two year course students develop skills in research, analysis and evaluation and are encouraged to criticise and question the implications and effectiveness of applying and following legal rules. Their learning is enhanced by taking part in role plays and talking to guest speakers, along with making visits to a variety of legal institutions. They are required to keep up-to-date with legal developments and discussions on the impact of these assists in appreciating the practical workings of the law.
Unit 3 at AS is a Source based examination, with students reading an extract from an Act or Case or Report and applying this information and their own legal knowledge to the questions. The synoptic element of A2 requires them to study material and again apply this information and their own legal knowledge to the questions on the paper.
Scheme of Assessment
The course comprises 3 units for AS Level and a further 3 for A2. There is no coursework. Students work individually and in small groups to help develop their understanding and skills and are assessed through their essays. Students are provided with copies of mark schemes and past papers to assist their study.
