AS & A2 Level History Print Page

Aims of the Course

The Sixth Form students who study the Edexcel GCE (8264) and the Advanced (9264) course use a variety of skills and concepts and buildings upon those used at GCSE Level. The Course shall explore:

  • significance of events, individuals, issues and societies in history
  • how and why societies have changed over time
  • the theories of historians and the language that they use to discuss their ideas
  • the nature of historical evidence and the methods used by historians to analyse and evaluate it
  • how the past has been interpreted and represented to express your own historical ideas confidently and effectively

Students who have not studied at KS4 may be allowed on the AS and A2 course dependent on their academic ethos.

Scheme of Assessment

The Course comprises of 3 modules for AS and a further 3 at A Level.

 

AS Level Modules

Russia in Revolution, 1905 - 17

  • The revolution of 1905: immediate causes, course and response of the regime to 1907
  • The impact of the First World War on the economy, government and the peoples of Russia

1914-17

  • The Provisional Governments and their problems, February .October1917
  • Lenin and the Bolsheviks in 1917.

The Triumph of Bolshevism? Russia, 1918-29

The Civil Wars: Allied intervention and Bolshevik victory, 1918.21

The consolidation of Bolshevik power and the internal power struggle after Lenin'sdeath

War Communism and the NEP

Soviet society: religion, the arts, women and the family

One question will be set on each option, comprising three sub-questions.

Students will be provided with one or two sources (c.150 words in total).

One sub-question will focus on the comprehension of source material.

A2 Level Modules

Unit 4

A Choice is available at A2 with respect to topics dependent on the interest of the students.

Unit 5

"The State and the Poor in Britain c1830 – 1939"

  • How did attitudes to the poor change in this period?
  • In what ways did state provision for the poor change in this period?

Unit 6

A Choice is available at A2 with respect to topics dependent on the interest of the students.
