Aims of the Course

A level art students also follow the Edexcel syllabus for both AS and A2. Both the AS and A2 have two units of work which follow Edexcel guidelines with a third unit being set by the Edexcel board. This qualification encourages an adventurous and enquiring approach to art and design. Successful students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of past and contemporary art and design practice and be able to produce artwork that embraces a range of ideas.

Scheme of Assessment

Unit 1 Thematic Enquiry: 30% of AS, 15% of A2. Internally set and marked. Externally moderated.

Unit 2 Expressive Study: 30% of AS, 15% of A2. Internally set and marked. Externally moderated.

Unit 3 Externally Set Assignment 8hr Exam: 40% of AS, 20% of A2. Internally marked, externally moderated.

Unit 4 Contextual Study: 15% of A2. Internally set and marked. Externally moderated.

Unit 5 Creative Problem Solving: 15% of A2. Internally set and marked. Externally moderated.

Unit 6 Externally Set Assignment 12hr Exam: 20% of A2. Internally marked, externally moderated.

 

AS Level Modules

Unit 1

Thematic Enquiry

All four Assessment Objectives must be met. Submissions must include:

  • work journal
  • evidence of research
  • evidence of analysis
  • idea development
  • outcome(s)
  • visual and/or written evaluation

Unit 2

Expressive Study

All four Assessment Objectives must be met. Submissions must include:

  • work journals
  • evidence of the development of visual language skills, showing sensitive selections of materials and processes

Unit 3

Externally Set Assignment

All four Assessment Objectives must be met. Submissions must include:

  • work done during the six week preparatory period
  • work journal
  • other preparatory studies
  • unaided work produced under examination conditions in a period of eight hours

 

A2 Level Modules

Unit 4

Contextual study

All four Assessment Objectives must be met. Submissions must include:

  • the personal study
  • it is expected in this unit that the work journal will include a bibliography, details of research, a list of resources and any other appropriate supporting information

Unit 5

Creative Problem Solving

All four Assessment Objectives must be met. Submissions must include:

  • work journal
  • evidence of the candidate’s solution(s) to the problem(s) which they have identified

Unit 6

Externally Set Assignment

All four Assessment Objectives must be met. Submissions must include:

  • work done during the six week preparatory period
  • work journal(s)
  • other preparatory studies
  • unaided work produced under examination conditions in a period of 12 hours
